Thermo Fisher Scientific announced its acquisition of Phadia, one of the leading companies within diagnostics of allergies and autoimmune diseases, for 23 billion SEK (approximately 3,5 billion USD). The acquisition, which is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2011, is expected to contribute positively by a raise of 0,26 – 0,30 USD per chair.

The deal will give AstraZeneca access to a portfolio of injectable medicines used to treat infections which AstraZeneca will make available to patients in China.

Agilent technologies announced the strategic acquisition of Halo Genomics, a privately held company in Uppsala, Sweden. Halo Genomics’ technology addresses sequence-selective (or “target enrichment”) sample preparation in next-generation-sequencing. The company’s proprietary HaloPlex technology combines the speed and specificity of polymerase chain reaction-based systems with the scalability and capture-size flexibility of solution-based hybridization formats, thus eliminating the need for library preparation.

BerGenBio AS, an emerging oncology biopharma in Bergen, Norway, is developing a first class inhibitor of Axl kinase, BGB324. Promising preclinical data was presented at the 53rd American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting and Exposition in San Diego, USA. The research suggests that Axl is a useful prognostic indicator for AML and the BerGenBio’s inhibitor, BGB324, is a highly effective therapeutic candidate.

Camurus, based in Lund, Sweden, has granted Novartis an exclusive option to licence the FluiCrystal® Injection depot technology to develop, manufacture and commercialize Camurus’ octreotide product CAM2029 and related unnamed products.
CAM2029 is a ready-to-use, long acting octreotide product being developed for treatment of patients with acromegaly, neuroendocrine tumours (NETs), and other indications.

BioInvent International AB announced that new preclinical data has been presented on its BI-505 program that demonstrates anti-cancer activity in multiple myeloma and beneficial effects on bone density. The results were presented at the American Society of Hematology (ASH) Annual Meeting, San Diego, USA in December 2011.

Aprea AB has announced that the first patient has been dosed in a clinical Phase I/II-study of APR-246. The primary aim of the study is to evaluate safety and pharmacokinetics, but also to make an early assessment of effectiveness.

DuoCort AB to be acquired by ViroPharma
DuoCort AB announces it has signed a definitive agreement to sell DuoCort Pharma AB and its orphan drug Plenadren® to the biopharmaceutical company ViroPharma Incorporated. The total potential deal value exceeds one billion SEK of which 220 million SEK will be paid by ViroPharma on closing.

Santaris Pharma A/S presents clinical trial data of drug to treat hepatitis C
Santaris Pharma A/S, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of RNA-targeted therapies, presents new data from the phase 2a trial at the AASLD conference in San Francisco in the beginning of November. Four out of nine patients treated with the highest dose of the drug miravirsen became undetectable for the hepatitis C virus.

Creative Antibiotics signs agreement with AMRI
The Swedish company Creative Antibiotics AB has signed an agreement with Albany Molecular Research, Inc. (AMRI). The goal is to further develop new substances against bacterial infections.

New patent for cancer adjuvant therapy issued
The Norwegian company Biotec Pharmacon ASA has been issued a patent by the Canadian Patent Office that covers the combination of two compositions of one or more monoclonal antibodies and yeast beta glucan for treatment of a large variety of cancers.

Sartorius acquires liquid handling business of Finnish company Biohit
Sartorius AG, a leading international process and laboratory technology provider has signed an agreement to aquire the entire liquid handling business of Helsinki-based Biohit Oyi for 68 million euro.

AstraZeneca increases investment in China
The company has announced a $200 million investment in a new manufacturing facility, located in China Medical City, Taizhou, Jiangsu province. The new site, which represents AstraZeneca’s largest ever investment in a single manufacturing facility globally, will produce both intravenous and oral solid medicines for the company’s growing business in China. Construction of the site is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2013.

Getinge acquires Atrium Medical
Atrium Medical Corporation has signed a definitive agreement to be acquired by Getinge Group of Sweden and its subsidiary, Maquet Cardiovascular, a global leading provider of cardiovascular technologies for $680 million. Atrium is a leader in medical device technologies for interventional cardiology and radiology, chest trauma care and thoracic drainage, vascular surgery, and general surgery. Atrium will operate as an independent, self-contained business unit of MAQUET Cardiovascular and will continue to be led by current Atrium President, Trevor Carlton.

The themes for this year’s conference were cancer and ophthalmology, but a strong focus was also placed on new business models and market strategies in the face of a changing technical environment and globalization. Nordic Life Science Review was there to cover the event.
